Breaking Out of a Scarcity Mindset
Hey Kristin, A while back, my partner and I were barely making ends meet, and it really put us in a scarcity mindset. Thankfully, we're in a better place now and I want to know how we can break out of that scarcity mentality and live smartly without going overboard. Any tips?
Dear Seeking Clarity, I understand that it can be tough to shake off old habits and start enjoying the money you've worked hard for. It's easy to worry about the future and hold back on treating yourself. However, life is meant to be enjoyed as well as endured, so it's important to strike a balance.
One way to do this is by setting up a budget. The 50/30/20 rule is a simple and effective way to manage your finances. Allocate 50% of your income to needs like rent and groceries, 30% to wants like dining out or shopping, and the remaining 20% to savings and goals.
Discuss your financial goals with your partner and be honest about your desires. Whether it's saving for a bigger purchase, investing, or just treating yourselves, budgeting can help you achieve your objectives while still enjoying life.
Remember, it's okay to take it slow and be kind to yourself during this transition. By making a mental shift and embracing a new perspective on your finances, you can break free from the scarcity mentality and start building a secure future. Best of luck on your journey! -Kristin
